The story goes like this.. Godess Parvathi, the wife of Lord Shiva created a Ganesh with the dirt of her body and told him to stay near the entrance to guard her door while she finished her bath. At this time Lord Shiva returned home and Ganesh stopped him without knowing that Lord Shiva is his own father. Lord Shiva became angry and chopped Ganesha’s head and Goddess Parvati came back and told Shiva that he killed his own son. Lord Shiva promised Parvathi that Ganesh will live again and asked Devas to find a head from a body which is facing north. Devas failed to find one and atlast got a elephants head. Lord Shiva placed the head on Ganesha’s body and gave him a new life. This incident gave Ganesh another named called Gajamugan ( elephant face ) and became the lord of hordes to save humans and Devas from trouble. Ganesh is worshipped for a good beginning, prosperous and wealthy life.
